Menzil Archery
In classical Islamic and Mamluk-Turkish archery literature, "Tirendaz" is a word of Persian origin meaning "arrow shooter," "archer," and "a person skilled in the art of shooting." During the Mamluk Sultanate (within the framework of Furusiyya rules) and the Ottoman military organization, tirendazes were elite classes who specialized not only in flat targets but also in the science of flying arrows to long distances (menzil).
In order to revive this ancient military and sporting tradition, Mamluk Academy has named its basic competence category "Tirendaz" and its master/grand chair level "Pehlivan".

Tirendaz CLASS
menzil archery
This category is the limited class where archers who have reached a certain technical competence but have not yet stepped into the master (Pehlivan) level compete.
-
Participation Requirements: Archers who will compete in this category or take the tiraz exams must hold a Basic Mamluk Archery Course certificate and must have officially reached at least the Cülban Yellow Tiraz level.
-
Bow Poundage Limit: A bow with a maximum power of 50lb (fifty pounds) can be used in this category. Bows of 50.1 lb and above cannot compete in this category.
-
Siper Prohibition: In the Tirendaz category, the use of a siper (overdraw device/trough) that allows the arrow to be drawn further over the hand is strictly prohibited. Arrows must be shot directly over the handle or over the thumb.
Symbol of the Tirendaz Class:
The double bow (Qawayn) motif, positioned symmetrically back-to-back at the center of the emblem, points to the highest degrees of spiritual proximity in Islamic tradition. The divine statement from Surah An-Najm (Verse 9), "Qaba qawsayni aw adna" (Two bows' length away or even closer), which describes the sacred proximity during the Night of Mi'raj, symbolizes for Turkish-Islamic archers that the art of shooting is not merely a physical feat, but an act of worship aimed at reaching Divine closeness. When the archer draws the bow, they embark on a journey toward that blessed horizon.
This emblem is the historical symbol of the Bundukdariyya (Bundukdari) group, one of the most elite military units of the Mamluk Sultanate, to which the legendary Sultan Baybars I also belonged and served in his early career.
Flight archery (Menzil) is the science of flying an arrow to the furthest horizon, to the absolute limit. The double bow design, with its upward and downward sweeping curves, represents the wings of a bird soaring in the sky or the wings of an arrow launched into flight. Just as the fletching guides the arrow, the wings in this emblem symbolize the archer's arrow slicing through the wind, taking wing toward eternity, and flying toward unbroken records.

Tirendaz Class uniform:

PEHLIVAN CLASS
menzil archery
This category is the highest level open class based entirely on historical Mamluk archery traditions, where master shooters take place.
-
Participation Requirements: Only master archers who have competed in the Tirendaz category and achieved at least a Yellow Tiraz (200m+) are eligible to compete in this category.
-
Bow Poundage Limit: There is no upper limit on bow poundage (Sınırsız/Unlimited). The archer can use any Asiatic bow of any poundage suitable for their physical capacity.
-
Siper Freedom: The use of a siper (overdraw trough) made of bone, horn, or wood, which is indispensable for historical flight shooting, is completely free in this category.
