How to string a bow

Stringing and Unstringing the Bow

In traditional asiatic archery, properly stringing the bow is a fundamental skill—both for the safety of the archer and the preservation of the bow itself. According to the great Mamluk master Taybugha, there are more than 120 known techniques for stringing a bow. However, only a few of these methods are considered both safe and structurally balanced. Below is one of the most commonly used and recommended methods in traditional practice:

1.     Positioning the Bow:

  • Begin by holding the upper limb of the bow with your right hand.

Place the lower limb of the bow against the crease of your left leg, specifically between the ankle and the knee.

2.    The Placing Right Leg Inside the Bow:

  • Step inside the bow with your right leg, positioning it between the limbs.

  • This provides stability and control over the bow while applying pressure.

3.     Placing the Grip Behind the Knee:

  • The Kabza (handle) of the bow should rest firmly behind your right knee.

  • This positioning ensures that both limbs bend evenly, preventing asymmetrical strain that could damage the bow.

4.     Drawing and Stringing the Bow:

  • Using your right arm, apply controlled pressure to bend the bow.

  • Simultaneously, bring the bowstring up to the nock groove of the upper limb and secure it into place.

5.     Final Safety Check:

  • Before releasing the bow, carefully check that the lower string loop is properly seated in its groove.

  • Make sure the string is securely attached at both ends before using the bow.

Important Notes and Warnings

·        Avoid sudden or forceful movements while stringing.

·        Always monitor whether both limbs are bending evenly and symmetrically.

·        An improperly seated string can cause severe injury or damage the bow.

·        This method is particularly suited for short, high-poundage Asiatic composite bows.
